CS2 Movement Guide: Counter-Strafing, Bunny Hopping and More
Movement Mastery in CS2
Good movement in Counter-Strike 2 is what separates mechanical players from truly skilled ones. Movement affects your accuracy, speed, positioning, and survivability. This guide covers everything from basic counter-strafing to advanced techniques.
Counter-Strafing: The Most Important Technique
In CS2, your bullets are inaccurate while moving. Counter-strafing is the technique of tapping the opposite movement key to stop instantly, allowing you to shoot accurately.
How to Counter-Strafe
- Move in a direction (hold A or D)
- When you want to shoot, quickly tap the opposite key (D or A)
- Fire immediately after the tap — you become accurate in about 50ms
- Resume movement or counter-strafe in the other direction
Practice Drill
In a private server with sv_showimpacts 1, strafe back and forth while shooting single bullets at a wall. Your shots should be hitting the same spot every time. If they are spread out, you are shooting too early (before fully stopping).
Peeking Techniques
Jiggle Peek
Quickly strafe out and back behind cover to bait shots or gather information. Tap A or D briefly, then immediately reverse. You expose yourself for minimal time while potentially causing the enemy to reveal their position.
Wide Peek (Swing)
Commit to a full wide peek to challenge an enemy. Best used when:
- You know exactly where the enemy is
- You have a teammate ready to trade
- You are peeking an AWPer (wide peeks are harder for AWPs to hit)
Shoulder Peek
Expose only your shoulder to bait an AWP shot, then re-peek while they cycle the bolt. Requires precise movement and timing.
Bunny Hopping
Bunny hopping (bhopping) is a movement technique where you chain jumps to maintain or gain speed. In CS2, bhops are possible but limited by the game engine.
How to Bhop
- Bind jump to mouse scroll down: in console type
bind mwheeldown +jump - Build speed by running forward
- Jump and release W (forward key)
- While in the air, strafe left (hold A) and move mouse left
- Land and immediately scroll to jump again
- Alternate: strafe right (hold D) and move mouse right on next jump
Important Notes
- CS2 caps bhop speed at approximately 300 units/sec (normal run speed is 250)
- Bhopping is inconsistent due to the speed cap — do not rely on it in competitive
- Missing a bhop slows you down significantly
- Useful for quick rotations and unpredictable movement, not for gaining massive speed
Air Strafing
While in the air (from a jump or fall), you can curve your trajectory by holding a strafe key and smoothly moving your mouse in the same direction. This is useful for:
- Reaching spots that require curved jumps
- Adjusting your landing position mid-air
- Making yourself harder to hit while jumping
Crouch Mechanics
Crouching in CS2 has specific uses and common mistakes:
When to Crouch
- During sprays: Crouching tightens your spray pattern and makes your head harder to hit
- Behind cover: Crouch behind low boxes to minimize exposure
- Silent movement: Crouch-walking makes no footstep sounds
When NOT to Crouch
- First bullet: Never crouch on your first shot. Counter-strafe and shoot at head level
- Peeking: Crouching while peeking makes you slow and predictable
- Against multiple enemies: Crouching commits you to one position, making you an easy target for the second enemy
Silent Movement
Sound is critical information in CS2. Here is how to move quietly:
- Walk (Shift): No footstep sounds. Use when you do not want enemies to hear you
- Crouch-walk: Also silent, but even slower. Use for very precise positioning
- Ladder movement: Hold walk while on ladders to make no sound
- Landing sound: Falling from height makes a landing sound. Drop from lower heights or onto soft surfaces when possible
Conclusion
Movement in CS2 is a deep skill that takes time to develop. Start with counter-strafing — it will have the biggest immediate impact on your gameplay. Then layer on peeking techniques, silent movement awareness, and eventually bunny hopping. Good movement makes your aim more effective, your positioning stronger, and your overall gameplay more unpredictable.
